MP 393.8, French Broad River Overlook

Regarded as the third oldest river in the world behind Egypt’s Nile and the deceptively named New River (which also flows through the Appalachian regions of West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina), scientists believe this ancient waterway predates the mountains through which it cuts its northwesterly course. The French Broad River has been a source of access and livelihood for Southern Appalachian residents for centuries.
